Chapter Sixteen

Just before dawn, Becka Horton pulled up outside Lance Stoke’s house. He reached for the handle then paused. He looked at his Sergeant. How long could he carry on keeping his secret from her? He wondered. They had worked together for more than a year now on various cases, but it was getting increasingly harder for him to keep his true self hidden from her. Now that they were hunting a werewolf, and possibly a rogue vampire, could he keep his secret from his colleague for much longer? Would she understand, even if he did confess to her? Of course not. What human would? She would run screaming in terror at the sight of him in his true form. He knew that. But there was something different about Becka Horton. He didn’t know what – but he just felt it. At first he wondered if he wasn’t letting the fact that he wanted to take her into his bed muddle his senses – but he knew there was something more than that. Did she know how he felt about her, he wondered, looking back at her in the gloom. He couldn’t believe that Becka hadn’t noticed how he sometimes looked at her, how he gently brushed against her in the office, or how he let his long fingers linger over hers as she passed him a file to sign. If she had have noticed, then Becka hadn’t let on.

Perhaps he should ask her into his home now? He wondered, lingering half in and out of the car door. She had never been inside his house. Maybe she was just waiting to be invited? He looked at her sitting behind the wheel, her long black hair hanging over her shoulder, bright hazel eyes staring back at him out of the darkness. He wondered what her eyes would look like half closed as he made love to her. He couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to have her pearly white skin next to his...

“Are you all right, Guv?” Becka suddenly asked.

“Huh?” he said, blinking as if coming out of a deep sleep.

“You look lost in thought,” she said with a smile.

Taking shallow breaths, Stoke said, “I was just wondering if perhaps you might like to come on inside and have some breakfast?”

Looking straight back at him, Becka smiled and said, “That’s really nice of you, Guv, but I should really be getting home.”

“Not even for a coffee?” he pushed gently.

“I’m truly whipped and just want to get some sleep, we have a long night ahead of us,” she smiled back, starting up the engine again.

“Perhaps some other time then?” Stoke said, mustering a smile.

“Perhaps,” she smiled back.

Stoke stood in the fading darkness and watched the rear lights of the car disappear into the distance. He felt unsettled, and if he were to be honest, he felt aroused. He often felt like this after making a kill, but as he watched the car carrying Becka away into the distance, he knew that niggling feeling of desire wouldn’t be quenched anytime soon.
